Yakitori (焼き鳥) is grilled skewered chicken mixed with a Teriyaki-like sauce. It is a quintessential Japanese soul food or grilled chicken skewers which is a culinary exploration of the entire bird from neck to tail. The yakitori dish is cheap and cheerful and is a staple in Japan’s food culture.
Yakitori is made with small pieces of chicken meat, chicken offal, or other meats with vegetables skewered on a bamboo stick and grilled over binchōtan charcoal. Yakitori is served in izakaya restaurants (Japanese tapas) as well as a specialty in yakitori restaurants which serve the dish alongside alcoholic beverages.
There are many types of yakitori, and some of the more common parts include Chicken Thigh, Chicken Breast, Chicken Tender, Chicken Wings, Chicken Cartilage and Chicken Liver. A lot is put into the preparation of a typical yakitori dish, and in fact, restaurants in Japan use unique chicken breeds from specific regions after the flavor, and the texture has been approved by the chef.
In most yakitori restaurants, your choice of flavor is either salt (shio) or with yakitori sauce (tare) and just by adding these simple flavors; you can transform any chicken part into something delicious by the simple seasoning of salt or yakitori sauce. Tare is made of soy sauce, sake, mirin, and sugar. Ginger and other ingredients can also be added to yakitori sauce, but to keep it simple you can use scallions.
For persons that live outside of Japan and would love to enjoy the delicacy, they can make it on a barbeque grill with charcoal underneath.
Whether you’re taking your yakitori in an izakaya or a restaurant, it’s all really simple and casual. Skewers are served one at a time and when ready you pick them up, place them on the plate in front of you, and enjoy with salt or spices. Omotesando proved to be the best choice last week. We wanted to try their delicious Yakitori and it did not disappoint us even for a second. The chicken was juicy, tender and each of us devoured every single bite. At first, we laid our hands on traditional yakitori. Then we started checking out other yakitori platters on offer. It included everything of the chicken – neck, skin, thigh liver, coccyx and heart. Even after a scrumptious yakitori experience, we were not yet over the delicious flavorful chicken. My next heart-stopping yakitori experience was to this small place next to Ana Intercontinental there is this Yakitori place. The serve fantastic chicken noodle soup with very flavorful and diverse Yakitori. I recommend the 6-piece Moriawase. The Place is decent and affordable but it’s the food that makes this place secure a position on #2 in my Quest for Yakitori Countdown.
Toricho Yakitori In Roppongi
Roppongi has variety of delicious food to offer. You can find assorted of food and restaurants in this area. However, this is one of the famous Yakitori places in the heart of Roppongi. Popularly also known as – a tourist hub-spot. You can find yourself brushing shoulders with many foreigners, tourists and locals and why not this place is like a magnetic. Its food attracts people of masses. We ordered a Moriawase and its flavors just danced in our mouths. They offer splendid food and the ambience is also worth mentioning and then there’s always the Japanese unconquered hospitality.
I stumbled upon this place while shopping. It was absolutely crowded. The yakitori was top. Cheap, fast, plentiful, and delicious.
